Bungan Boardriders' Club was established in 2016 as a means of strengthening a more integrated beach culture, with surfers of all ages getting together for regular surf meets - and to make the most of Bungan's great surf. Their website says: "We strive to create a tighter, positive community around surfing, rather than an aggressive line up that is sometimes the bitter sweet reality of our sport." They hold monthly competitions with events such as Micro Grom, Juniors, Under 18's, Opens, Over 40's, Over 55's and Women's in an effort to encourage girls back to the sport.
Bungan Surf Life Saving Club has been looking after the welfare of Bungan beach-goers for nearly 70 years. It has a 30 year association with Barker College as a highly effective means of recruiting younger members. In the year 2018-19 club efforts amounted to some 3250 hours of patrol time . . . . making Bungan a very safe beach to swim at. Bungan SLSC also hosts a very popular Nippers Program every weekend to teach kids about surf safety. Both the Nippers and the Bronze Medallion program raise fitness awareness and a celebration of the great outdoors, as well as strengthening skills and water-confidence from a very young age. Just to be sure, see SLSC Australia's Tips for Surf Safety
Taking in the Red Hands Cave and Basin Aboriginal Art site is an ideal thing to do on a bad-weather beach day. Both are accessed form the Resolute Picnic grounds on the road to West Head through Kuringai Chase National Park. They are the work of the Guringai people, the original inhabitants and are thought to be over 5000 years old. If you walk the 5km loop (3.5 hours) you will see both sites . . . and have a welcome dip in Pittwater on the way around at Resolute Beach. The engravings are best viewed early morning or late afternoon as the sun low in the sky casts deeper shadow.
